Online CPD Courses

The application of the ACN-PCN system is poorly understood. In this short course, Bruce Rodway describes the system as used to report the bearing capacity of airfield pavements.

"Engineer/ Project Manager to Strategic Planner" - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? Is this just some way to rename the same old job to make it sound more important? No, it is something very much different. Strategic business management planning encompasses issues that fall OUTSIDE of the traditional engineering or project management function and directly relate to the business of the organization.

Rigid Airport Pavements: Design

Hours: 4 Notify Me
Price:
$149.00
Available: Wed, 30/01/2013

In this course, Bruce Rodway describes the design methods for rigid airfield pavements. These methods remain the basis of most of the world’s aircraft pavement design methods, including that used by the Federal Aviation Administration in the US and in Australia. Understanding the origins of these design methods is therefore essential for any airfield engineer.

The difference between someone who can get an idea off the ground and accepted in an organization and someone who can't isn't a question of who has the better idea. It's a question of who has political competence. Political competence isn’t something you're born with, but a skill you learn. It's an out-in-the-open process of methodically mapping the political terrain, building coalitions, and leading them to get your idea adopted.

This course takes the approach that at some point in your professional career, you will have to act as a calm voice of reason between two or more stakeholders with differences that threaten the success of the project. We will help you understand the risk involved in a traditional “win-win” approach to resolving project stakeholder differences. Then you will be able to develop a new strategy and supporting tactics that will either assure “satisfaction” on both sides or at least maintain good will if an agreement cannot be reached. You will learn to analyze the requirements of their satisfaction for every negotiating situation and develop tactics to achieve it.

Rigid Airport Pavements: Construction

Hours: 4 Notify Me
Price:
$149.00
Available: Wed, 30/01/2013

In this course, Bruce Rodway describes some construction methods for rigid airport pavements. Rigid pavements rarely fail due to inadequate pavement thickness when determined from established design methods. Rigid pavement failures can be more frequently attributed to poor joint detailing and methods of construction. In this course, Bruce describes some aspects of rigid airfield construction which are commonly not well understood but are essential to the production of a durable rigid pavement.

An Introduction to Earthworks and Geotechnical Engineering

Hours: 2 Notify Me
Price:
$99.00
Available: Thu, 28/02/2013

There are few disciplines of civil engineering that do not require an understanding of the interactions between a structure and the ground. Building, bridges, roads and railways all rely on the bearing capacity of the ground in some way to support the overlying structure. Further, roads and railways pass through cuttings or are built on embankment, and rely on the structural integrity of the earthworks materials to provide a safe and reliable foundation.

This Engineering CPD Online course is based on papers provided by Professor Stephen Brown. The course provides a general introduction to the design of asphalt pavements for engineers in practice who have little detailed background on this important element of transport infrastructure engineering.

ACN-PCN System - Demonstration

Hours: 1 Read More
Price:
$0.00

This FREE course is a demonstration of the online learning experience provided by Engineering CPD Online. It is based on Section 2 of the course ACN-PCN System for Airfield Pavements by Bruce Rodway. The purpose of this course is to demonstrate the format of the online learning including use of video and worked examples, review questions and end of course assessment.

Adelaide Airport was resurfaced in 2010/11. This was a major project requiring resurfacing works to be carried out in night shifts between aircraft movements.

Asphalt

Hours: 2 Read More
Price:
$99.00

Asphalt is a material commonly used in the design of road and airfield pavements. It is a versatile product providing a smooth running surface and providing protection to the lower pavement layers.  However, it is also a complex product and not always well understood by pavement engineers.

This course is not about how to avoid making mistakes – as if writing such a course were actually possible – but how to recover as gracefully as possible from the inevitable moments when you wish you could rewind the tape and start over.
